"One Hundred and fifty years ago, before the construction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway overwhelmed the neighborhood, Red Hook was one of the busiest ports in the world.  Today, the quaint waterfront is less quiet than it used to be, as the neighborhood grows into the last reguse of the Brooklyn hipster, but it still boasts wonderful views across the East River to Governors Island and to the Atlantic.  Even with the arrival of the much-contested Ikea store--and the residence in 2009 of the cast of Real World Brooklyn--walking along the docks and back streets at the port of Red Hook is like stepping back in time.  And as compensation for invading the area, Ikea offers free water taxis from downtown Manhattan to Red Hook and back on weekends. Even if you're not out for affordable Scandinavian housewares, it's worth the ride for the views alone.  CONOVER STREET AND BEAR STREET, RED HOOK IN BROOOKLYN"  - The Best Things to Do in New York
